mHealth Initiatives in India
India has adopted multiple mobile-based digital health solutions to strengthen service delivery, surveillance and behaviour change communication under the National Health Mission and Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
1. Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (RMNCH+)
i) Mother and Child Tracking System (MCTS) & RCH Portal: Tracks antenatal care, immunization, and post-natal services.
ii) ANMOL (ANM Online): Tablet-based app for ANMs to record real-time service delivery.
iii) Kilkari: Free weekly audio messages for pregnant women & new mothers.
iv) Mobile Academy: Mobile-based training platform for frontline workers (ASHAs).
2. Immunization
i) eVIN (Electronic Vaccine Intelligence Network): Mobile + web system to manage vaccine stocks and cold chain logistics.
3. Disease Control & Surveillance
i) Nikshay (for TB elimination): Smartphone-based reporting, adherence tracking, incentives, drug delivery monitoring.
ii) IDSP (Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme) mobile apps: For reporting suspected outbreaks and weekly surveillance.
iii) Malaria/MERA India app: Used in some states for surveillance, LLIN distribution and case management.
4. NCDs (Non-Communicable Diseases)
i) NCD App / CPHC-NCD App: For population-based screening of hypertension, diabetes, oral/breast/cervical cancers.
ii) mDiabetes programme: Mobile-based awareness system for lifestyle advice.
5. General Digital Health Ecosystem
i) ABHA App (Ayushman Bharat Health Account): Enables creation of a digital health ID and sharing of health records.
ii) ABDM (Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission) Mobile Suite: A family of apps integrating registries, teleconsultation, e-prescriptions, and digital health records.
iii) eSanjeevani: National telemedicine service with mobile-based OPD and doctor–to–doctor consultations.
iv) Tele-MANAS (Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States):
A national 24×7 mobile-based mental health helpline offering tiered teleconsultation, crisis counselling and referral services through toll-free numbers and integrated call centres.
6. Health Communication & Behaviour Change
i) mCessation: SMS-based tobacco cessation support program.
ii) Swasthya App, Aarogya Setu (COVID-19 era): For contact tracing, self-assessment, and advisories.
7. Emergency & Public Health Utility Apps
i) 104 Health Helpline Apps (State-specific): Tele-advice, ambulance request, counselling.
ii) eRaktKosh Mobile App: Finding and reserving blood units in nearby blood banks.
8. Special Programmes
i) Reproductive Health Apps for Adolescents (state-level: SATHI, TeCHO+, Swasthya Saathi etc.)
ii) TeCHO+ (Technology-Enabled Community Health Operations) – Gujarat: Mobile platform for RMNCH, NCDs, real-time field data.
iii) KHUSHI / ASHA Soft – Rajasthan: Salary & performance incentive disbursement for ASHAs through mobile interface.
