Role of Vitamin C in cholesterol metabolism (TIME STAMP-08:14)
Ascorbic acid is involved in the regulation of cholesterol metabolism in several ways.
Dietary inadequacy of vitamin C is associated indirectly with a lowering of cholesterol absorption, this effect resulting from a reduction in the availability of bile acids, monoglycerides and fatty acids.
Cholesterol synthesis is decreased in vitamin C deficiency due to a decrease in the activity of the microsomal enzyme cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase.
Role of Vitamin B3 in cholesterol metabolism
Nicotinic acid (Niacin) when given in higher doses reduces plasma lipids.
Nicotinic acid reduces production of VLDL in liver by inhibiting TG synthesis.
It inhibits intracellular lipolysis in adipose tissue and increases the activity of lipoprotein lipase that clears TG.
It Is the most effective drug to raise HDL-CH by decreasing rate of HDL destruction
Dose limiting side effect is marked flushing, heat and itching (cutaneous vasodilator)
